Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also helps to realize a more compact and lightweight alternative to an f/2.8 zoom.
Central sharpness is pretty comparable here, although it leans slightly toward the 40mm f/2. The minimal amount of field curvature on the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S makes it look better in the midframe, especially at 50mm. However, the corner performance of the 40mm f/2 is much better than the corner performance of the 24-70mm f/4 S.
The Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is a professional standard zoom lens for the Nikon Z7 and Z6 full frame mirrorless cameras. One stop faster than the already excellent 24-70mm F4 kit lens, does the new Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S version offer enough extra features and performance to justify its rather eye-watering price-tag?
The great strength of the 24-70mm f/2.8S is precisely that it provides high quality at all apertures and focal lengths - looking for a 'sweet spot' goes against the major strength of this lens. The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S was already one of the best 50mm primes I’ve ever reviewed. In fact, it was hands-down the best standard f/1.8 prime I’ve ever tested, and better than most f/1.4 ~50mm primes, too. Therefore, SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t need f/1.2, then you already have one of the absolute best 50mm lenses on the market available
